The Law of Inevitability is the seventh episode of Season 3, and the twenty-seventh episode overall. It premiered May 31, 2017.

Synopsis[]

Gloria tries to work around the system, Nikki finds herself in a familiar place, Varga comes up with an alternative plan and Emmit goes to dinner.

Plot[]

V.M. Varga, alone in Emmit Stussy's house, methodically opens the presents under his Christmas tree using a pen knife while Gloria Burgle and Winnie Lopez discover Ray Stussy's body. Moe Dammick tracks Nikki Swango to her motel room and arrests her on suspicion of Ray's death. Emmit sits down to dinner with Sy Feltz and Ruby Goldfarb, but it quickly turns sour as his emotional state over the death of his brother leads him to make several morbid statements and repeat some of Varga's talking points about wealth. Winnie arrives to inform Emmit of Ray's death, to which he acts shifty before Sy leads him away. Winnie decides to interview Goldfarb.

Dammick concludes that Nikki is guilty based on the bruising of her body, the illegal nature of her and Ray's relationship, and the circumstances of his death, unknowingly validating Varga's fabricated story. Dammick and Winnie's boss, Hans Muderlack, call Gloria and Winnie into Muderlack's office. Muderlack orders Winnie back on traffic duty. Gloria lays out her current theory, all of it correct, but Dammick again shuts her down and orders her to take leave until after the holidays.

At the Eden Valley police station, Donny Mashman locks up for the night before realizing he has forgotten his pistol. When he goes back, he finds that Yuri Gurka has broken in to steal Ennis Stussy's case file. Yuri threatens him into silence and leaves. Pulling up to Emmit's house, Sy begs him to sell the company so they can escape Varga, but Emmit refuses, accusing him of working with Ray. Varga joins Emmit in his foyer and asks how he feels: Emmit responds by saying he feels free. Sy, distressed, goes home to his wife and weeps, unsure of his place in the world after losing Emmit's trust.

Gloria attempts to obtain an illegitimate interview with Nikki, but fails. Nikki, in a holding cell, is approached by a cop who handcuffs her to the bars and prepares to inject her with a substance, actually a man named Golem who works for Varga. Gloria stops him by pulling a gun, but is stopped from arresting him by Dammick, and Golem flees. Reviewing security footage, the police find it has been corrupted. Gloria convinces Dammick to let her talk to Nikki, but all she surrenders is an instruction to "follow the money." Dammick plans to transfer her, putting her in protective custody. Gloria offers to bring Nikki pie after Christmas to talk about the case, and she accepts. Nikki is placed on a prison bus and handcuffed to her seatmate, who turns out to be Wes Wrench. As the bus drives through a forest, Varga's men derail it and begin to cut through the bars as Nikki lies unconscious.
